The N-5G class

N-5G

Between 1939 and 1946 the Lehigh Valley Railroad built, a series of 140 caboose ( numbered 95001-95140 ) Based on the classic "Northeasten design" with distintive rain channels added over the windows making them easy to identify as former Lehigh Valley. There are two phases and eight lots,

Generally Phase 1 cabosoes had one square window on right side of end, cushion underframe, flush roof/end walks, cast steps. Like many other railroad rolling stock, there where exceptions - some phase one cabooses also had a second square window on the left side of the ends, some had fabricared steps instead of cast steps.

LOT 1 7/37 TO 12/37 95050-95069 $4,885
LOT 2 6/39 TO 7/39 95070-95079 $4,046

Penn Central purchased sixteen in 1968, in three batches. ( LV # 95107, 95108, 95112, 95119, 95124, 95127, 95001, 95008, 95045, 95071, 95121, 95042, 95078, 95098, 95101 and 95126) They were probably purchased to releive caboose shortate. They repainted , renumbered 18400 - 18405, 18417 - 18426 ( in the same sequence with the earlier LV numbers ) and assigned to yard service.

When Conrail acquired the cars in 1976, the PC cars rejoined the remaining Lehigh Valley cabose to form a class of 92 with numbers 18613-18704. While Conrail retained the PC classification and numbering system for cabooses it renumbered the N-5Gs in to a new series ( 18600 ).

The cars were 34-feetlong, 11-1/2-inches high from rail head to roofline (excluding the cupola which was about 2-feet, 6 inches high); and 6-feet, 6-3/8-inches wide. Caboose weighed about 44000 Ibs.
