Penn Central Caboose Photo Archive

The N5K Class

Most built by AT&SF in 1951, maybe other years. These cars were originally full cupola-style with four windows on each side. In 1970 AT&SF sold Penn Central seven cabooses that became the N-5K class. After Penn Central bought them, the cupola was cut down; leaving a stubby bump in the roofline. The stove vent was moved to the stub of the cupola. Several windows were plated over and a new bay window added.

They were assigned to transfer service.

All went to Conrail with their PC numbers. Two exist today.

PC 18443 was originally ATSF 1564
PC 18444 was originally ATSF 1626
PC 18445 was originally ATSF 1704
PC 18446 was originally ATSF 1717
PC 18447 was originally ATSF 1720
PC 18448 was originally ATSF 2258 had a peaked roof
